Aid

ASFC will from time to time make donations to overseas orphanages as deemed appropriate by the Executive Committee.

Most of our aid is raised via the annual subscription fee and donations.

In 2003 we donated money to Friends for All Children in Thailand for the purchase of bicycles.

December 06 - on goingOur Chinese Daughters Foundation - ChinaMoney raised so far: $2,200 (inclusive ASFC Donation of $1000)http://www.ocdf.org/orphansupport
LiMing Orphanage is about 2 hours drive from DaMing and is run by volunteer nuns from the Chinese Catholic Church. There are 101 children at LiMing and an additional 40 children in foster care with local families. In 2000, they changed to a new boiler for heating and the heat is shared with the Catholic Convent within the compound. Last year their heating bill was 55,000 RMB (around $9,109,83 ASD). They consumed all their coal last year but they were only able to heat their facilities between 5-9 am and 6-8 pm. The remainder of the day and night were without heat! Many of the children have special needs and do not have the mobility to stay warm without heating. Once again, there is only enough coal to heat the facilities for 6 out of 24 hours each day.

MarchLiwan Project - EthiopiaASFC Donation: $2,000http://www.worldfamilies.org.au
WFA has been asked to build a school in a remote small and poor village in an are near Bonga, Ethiopia. The village is called Liwan and is home to the Shuro people who live in traditional tukuas - round houses made from natural materials. The Shuro have been an isolated, outcast and feared group for over a century. Liwan has no clean water, no health services, no phone or electricity. Access to the town is by foot or mule from the town of Dekia, which is over an hour walk away. The anticipated cost of providing a school for up to grade 4 is $33,000. It is hopeful that if the project receives enough support it will be able to teach children up to grade 10, and help the teachers to obtain training. The cost of providing safe water for this community is under $10,000. The current water supply is very dirty and is used by animals and people.

The Children’s Home was established in 1976 after a protracted typhoon hit the Manila region leaving many abandoned and neglected children living in unbearable conditions. Reverend Jose Mejica and his wife, Fe, started taking these children into their home to raise as their own. Reverend Jose and Fe have now both passed away, and their son, Nathaniel, and his wife Ruth now run the children’s homes. In the spirit of the founder, Nathaniel and Ruth seek to provide the children with a home and family rather than just food and shelter. Their goal is to provide every child in their care with opportunities to gain love, an education and spiritual support to allow them to grow to their full potential.

This project also supports yet another worthy cause as the Group buys blankets from young women in the New Life Project, which was established to provide employment for women in rural villages. This is to help prevent an exodus into Bangkok and other large cities in search of employments where many find themselves thrown into the sex industry. We purchased 100 blankets. 2. $800.00 for The Daughters of Charity project is to build a school for a recently opened leprosy community at Tulema in Jimma, Ethiopia. The school is located in a very poor area so it will be opened to the wider community so schooling is available to older children as well with the added benefit of breaking down the barriers and isolation of those with leprosy.
